| howdy, kiddos. here is my 'year in music' review of 2006. it's mostly the same categories as last year, with a few changes and additions. enjoy.
favorite new "indie" band- Windmills In The Ocean and Sparrows Swarm And Sing, equally. check them out, seriously-- WITO is on Robotic Empire, SSAS on Magic Bullet.
favorite new hardcore band- I really like Mastodon, but this award goes to Intronaut. not that one is necessarily better than the other. i just got to see Intronaut actually play live and had the pleasure of meeting such nice upstanding gents.
best local show- 12/19, Madhouse Records... most fun I've had in years. (who else can say they had a really hot girl doing an interpretive dance behind them while playing "Hotel California" to a room full of kickass people singing along to every word? not to mention the guitar solo...)
best live band- probably Sparrows Swarm And Sing. they were exceptional.
best new local band- HEATSTROKE. dude, by FAR. very amazing.
best local band that broke up- Vessels. i never even got to see you fuckers play! death to shady asshole guitarists.
best album- honestly, i'm not gonna lie to you. i truly think Kites' Killing Ray Brauer is the best damn thing I've heard all year. I got a rough copy of it 6 months before it was released and haven't been able to put it down since. very honorable mention goes to HEATSTROKE's demo (it's that good), and seriously I have to say... beyond these, I have been disappointed by everything I have heard throughout the year at all the Borders' listening stations I've visited. (oh, and if Mono released an album this year, then it's probably really good too.)
biggest disappointment- The Mars Volta's new album Amputechture. It's still good, it's just that compared to an amazing effort like Frances The Mute, it really sucks.
guilty pleasure- goddammit... that Nelly Furtado song about being promiscuous. forgot what it's called... ;-) also that "Out Of Control" song by Kenna isn't too bad either.
group that still kicks ass- Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. old people's music and tequila, anyone?
worst video- good god, almost all of them. kinda done with music vids.
best new song- as much as i hate to say it, that damn My Chemical Romance song from their new album that's always playing. i'll get parts of that song stuck in my head for days and it drives me crazy.
classic rock artists i respect more nowadays- Foghat. SO overlooked. those fuckers brought the serious rock. also, I've gotten to where I don't change the station when Styx comes on. btw, anyone heard of Rory Gallagher? that man is the shit, I'm sure there's a Myspace for him.
surprise of the year- Incubus getting way better. i mean, what the HELL?
best thing that happened to me- pretty much the entire 12/19 show, but especially when I got to scream with HEATSTROKE on "Dr. Killingsworth". that was pretty boss. and of course "Hotel California" earlier that night... that show just kicked so much ass, seriously.
shittiest thing that happened locally- Counter Culture Cafe closing down. honorable mention goes to Leslie not booking shows for Modified anymore. both of these just depress me.
best lyric heard whilst driving before sunrise- "well, we've got no class / and we've got no principles [get it? haha.] / and we got no innocence / we can't even think of a word that rhymes!", from alice cooper's "school's out". that shit'll make you laugh at 6 in the morning.
have a happy new year, everyone... and please don't die. | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |

| here's why... my current listening rotation:
Chopin- Waltzes (D. Alexeev, piano) Chopin- Etudes (M. Perahia, piano) Chopin- Mazurkas (R. Smith, piano) Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass- Whipped Cream and Other Delights
and swing tunes. yep. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Yeah... it sucks. Like, really bad. I enjoyed maybe a minute of one track. Very disappointing.
This, however, does not suck, at all. Very good stuff. I'd even recommend buying it w/o a listen.
This is pretty good. Punk-influenced Brit rock... never bad. Some good moments here.
And I couldn't find an image for the cover, but Ben Kweller's new album is pretty impressive, seeing as he wrote and performed the entire thing himself. Not great, but quite good... very catchy. Poppy and whatnot.
Anyway. | comments: Leave a comment |

| So. Here I am, back on LJ... with, like, almost nothing to say.
Lately just been doing the murder mystery dinner theatre... also got cast in two shows with a professional company that performs for children in the daytime, and that starts in January, so I'm a little anxious to get rolling on that. Wrote a couple a capella pieces for a show at Theater Works, been studying music history, becoming enamored with the works of Chopin (mostly mazurkas, waltzes, etudes, but it's all amazing), trying to enjoy film again but not really succeeding (i do love that Walk The Line is in rotation on HBO, though), been watching too much Arrested Development (if that's even possible), got back in touch with my stepbrother, all kinds of wild, wacky shtuff.
anyway... that is all for now.
Oh, and Heroes is the most amazing new show this year. Also, Criminal Minds... still the best drama on TV-- until 24 comes back. Yeah. I'm such a TV geek. (Go watch some Frasier!) | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |
